Dutch oven?
A Dutch oven is a cast iron casserole dish, with a tight-fitting lid and an enamelled or unglazed surface. It is used for slow cooking, braising, soups, stews, as well as cooking in the oven or over a campfire.
The shape of the casserole dish (often round or oval) allows for an even distribution of heat, which is ideal for long and slow cooking.
Main characteristics of a Dutch oven:
• Material: Made of cast iron, which gives it excellent heat retention capacity.
• Heavy Duty Lid: The lid is designed to keep heat and moisture inside, promoting gentle cooking.
• Versatile use: It can be used on a hob, in an oven or even on a wood fire.
• Enamel packaging: Some Dutch ovens are glazed, which makes them easier to clean and protects them from rust. But less resistant to heat.
Dutch ovens are popular for their durability and ability to cook at uniform temperatures, even over long periods of time, making them go-to utensils for cooking stews, breads, or even cooking meats in a casserole.
