What is Corten Steel?
Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a type of steel that stands out for its ability to naturally form a protective layer of rust when exposed to air and weather. This layer of surface rust acts as a barrier against corrosion, preventing further degradation of the steel.
The name “Corten” is derived from two of its main characteristics:
- CorrosionResistance
- TensileStrength
The main characteristics of Corten steel?
Weather resistance
Unlike conventional steel, Corten steel develops a uniform rust patina that protects it from further corrosion. It does not need treatment or painting to withstand weather conditions.
Aesthetic
Corten steel is prized for its distinctive appearance, which varies between orange-brown and dark brown, changing over time. This rustic and industrial side is very much appreciated in contemporary architecture and artistic works.
Durability
Thanks to its high strength and corrosion protection, it is durable and requires little maintenance.
Who invented Corten steel?
In the 1930s , the Americans (US Steel) designed Corten steel to help build railroad coal cars.
How to maintain Corten steel?
CorTen steel requires little maintenance since corrosion forms a protective layer that stabilizes itself after 2 or 3 years. It is best to do nothing to “maintain” this metal, as exposure to wind and moisture gives it its unique and protective appearance over time. It is therefore better to avoid:
- Varnishes that require maintenance while patina does not.
- Soap, water or pressure washers;
- Abrasive pads and chemicals that damage the patina;
